You can hand a manufacturer a perfect logo file and still end up with a float that looks washed-out, blurry, or cracked after a single summer in the sun. That gap opens at the printing stage. Not every technique performs equally well on vinyl or PVC, and a wrong call costs you money and brand credibility both.
Understanding what printing methods are used for logos and patterns on custom inflatables helps you ask the right questions before you place an order. Here are five methods you'll encounter most often.
Screen Printing
Screen printing is one of the oldest and most straightforward techniques in the industry. Sublimation Printing

The process converts solid ink into a gas under heat and pressure, and that gas bonds directly with the polymer fibers of the material rather than sitting on top as a layer.
Because the ink becomes part of the material itself, you don't get peeling, cracking, or fading the way you might with a surface coating. Colors stay vivid even after repeated inflation cycles and extended pool use. But sublimation requires materials with a high polyester content to work correctly. On surfaces that don't absorb dye the same way, colors can come out muted or uneven.
For promotional inflatables that need to replicate a full brand color palette – think branded floats with photo-quality product images – sublimation delivers results that screen printing can't match. It scales well across a range of sizes and is well suited to shapes with curved surfaces.

Heat Transfer Printing
Heat transfer printing involves printing the design onto a transfer film and then bonding that film to the inflatable surface with heat and pressure. It bridges the gap between screen printing and sublimation, and it's particularly useful when you need full-color output on materials that won't absorb sublimation dye.
The transfer film locks ink onto the PVC surface through adhesion rather than absorption. Done correctly, it produces a smooth, bright finish with solid color accuracy. Durability depends heavily on material quality and application temperature. A transfer applied too cool peels early; one applied correctly can hold for years under normal conditions.
Heat transfer is a smart pick for shorter runs where screen printing setup costs aren't justified, and for complex designs on vinyl products where sublimation isn't an option. It also allows for metallic effects and special finishes that other methods can't produce on flexible materials.
UV Flatbed Printing
UV flatbed printing uses ultraviolet light to cure ink almost instantly as it lands on the material. Solvent inks dry through evaporation; UV inks don't. They harden in seconds under UV lamps built directly into the printer head, yielding excellent color density and scratch resistance.
This method handles fine detail well. If your logo has fine text, tight crosshatching, or small-scale pattern repeats, UV printing reproduces those elements more reliably than screen or heat transfer methods at the same size. It also produces minimal odor compared to solvent-based processes, which matters in production environments with ventilation limits.
One trade-off is flexibility. UV-cured inks can crack on surfaces that flex repeatedly under stress - a concern for inflatables that get rolled, folded, or over-inflated regularly. The best results come when the inflatable design accounts for flex zones and keeps detailed UV printing in areas that stay relatively flat when the product is in use.
Solvent-Based Inkjet Printing
Solvent inkjet printing uses aggressive chemical carriers to push pigment into the surface of PVC and vinyl rather than simply coating it. The solvent dissolves a thin layer of the material, and when it evaporates, it leaves pigment bonded within the substrate itself. That bond is what makes solvent printing so durable outdoors.
This method works well in banner-scale applications and large-format inflatable panels where weather resistance is the top priority. Solvent inks handle UV exposure, moisture, and temperature swings better than many alternatives, which is why they appear frequently in outdoor advertising inflatables and large event structures.
The trade-off is environmental and practical. Solvent inks require ventilation during printing and longer dry times compared to UV methods. Eco-solvent alternatives reduce the chemical load somewhat, but the drying window still adds to production time. For large inflatables meant to live outdoors for extended stretches, that trade-off is usually worth it.
