Hi everyone! As a makeup lover I always wanted to capitally learn the makeup theory. The knowledge of a basic makeup techniques and current trends was never enough to me. I wanted to learn the full makeup history and behind the scenes of cosmetic industry.

That's why some time ago I`ve decided to dedicate few interesting posts and gather them under one rubric of makeup theory. Today I`m going to talk about basic makeup brush anatomy and tell you a little bit about the manufacturing process of our favorite makeup tools. I hope my lesson will be informative for makeup professionals and passionate makeup lovers.

First of all lets take a closer look on a makeup brush appearance and the process of its creation. Basically all brushes high end or a cheap drugstore brushes are made in the same way. The only thing that differs from brand to brand is the quality and origins of the materials used for creation of the brush and manufacturing process on a factory.

Can you believe that every makeup brush out there is handmade? Synthetic or natural, cheap or high end, high quality or low - all brushes are made by hand and though they are unique! People who work on the brush factory pay a very special attention to every step of the production process. It starts with hair preparation - a worker needs to gather, comb and mound hairs together. Then the hairs are carefully inserted in the ferule and pressed by a special machine. To make sure all hairs will stay on the place, they are glued together. Then a handle is added into the ferule and the brush is ready to be packed.

Basic makeup brush anatomy
Every makeup brush consists of three main parts: handle, ferrule and a head. These parts can be made of different materials, but they are possibly the most important elements when it comes to the quality of the brush.

Head - the actual hairs or bristles of a brush. There are many types of a hair that are used for makeup brushes. Common makeup brush can be made of a special synthetic or natural animal hairs. Usually manufacturers use squirrel, pony or goat hairs by carefully cutting or even picking the fallen hairs (cruelty free production). Manufacturers can also use different blends of hair for a larger makeup brushes like powder or contouring brushes. Nowadays more and more brands prefer to use synthetic materials over the natural hairs. A special man - made materials are not worse than a natural hair. These materials are non toxic, have very soft and smooth texture and sometimes last longer than a natural hairs. The most common materials used for synthetic makeup brushes are polyester. nylon and taklon.

The fullest part of brush or the flattest part (depends on the type) called a belly. Usually we use this part of the brush to press powder and eyeshadow on the skin. The end of the brush head called toe or point. The toe of a brush can have different shape and size and the final makeup results usually depend on this part of the brush.

Ferrule - a metal tube that holds the hairs and bristles of a brush and connects them with the brush handle. Ferrule is usually made of light metals: brass, copper, aluminum or tin. Ferrule should perfectly fit the head and the handle of the brush, otherwise the bristles will fall out. Ferrule`s heel is a part where the tube gets narrower, it presses and holds all the hair tightly together. A special glue is also used to secure hairs in the ferrule. A part where the ferrule connects with a handle calls crimp.

Handle - a part that is used to hold a brush. A handle can be wooden, plastic or even metal. The size of the handle can be very different, depending on the manufacturer and the type of a brush. Usually an eyeliner brushes have longer and thinner handles, this allows a makeup artist to keep a better balance. Kabuki and some contouring brushes have shorter handles and this allows to have a better control over the brush. Brands and manufacturers use handles to express their imagination and sometimes they create a real masterpieces on this part of a brush. Of course the design of the handle does not effect the final result, but it is always nice to have a beautiful brush set.

Next time we are going to take a closer look on each type of makeup brush and learn how they work with the makeup products and what result they provide. Few days ago I have finally watched Tom Cruise's new movie The Mummy. Growing up as a huge action adventure fan I loved The Mummy franchise with all my heart, so I was absolutely thrilled to watch the new version of a good old classic movie. And even though I have a mixed feelings about the new Mummy I`m absolutely in love with the stunning Egyptian makeup of Ahmanet. Her eye look is a simple version of Horus Eye makeup and it features two dramatic wings, one regular cat eye liner and one on the bottom lash line with a bit of teal eyeshadow. Inspired by this incredible makeup, today I`m going to show you how to recreate Ahmanet's Egyptian eye look. Follow my simple step by step tutorial and learn how to make your eyes look like charming and desirable.

1. Start your makeup with an eyeshadow primer, apply it all over your eyelid and then blend with a help of your ring finger. Eyeshadow primer will help your Egyptian makeup to last all day long without fading and creasing. Don`t forget to fill in your eyebrows, you can use your favorite eyeshadow or eyebrow pencil as you prefer.

2. Apply a matte peachy eyeshadow all over your eyelid and blend it with a help of fluffy blending brush. Peachy shade will beautifully contrast with a bright blue eyeshadow, creating a perfect combo for classic Egyptian makeup.

3. Now it is a time for the winged cat eyeliner, you can use any kind of eyeliner product you prefer: liquid, gel or cream eyeliner.  To make your look more intense tightline the upper waterline with a help of black eye kohl.

4. Ahmanet is an ancient mummy, but she looks young and fresh, so conceal any dark circles under your eyes and set the concealer with setting powder. Now it is time to sketch the bottom line with a help of a fine synthetic eyeliner brush.

5. Apply a teal blue eye pencil on the waterline and fill the bottom lash line with this gorgeous color. On the top of the pencil I also applied eyeshadow to make the color last longer and look brighter. This bold accent is my favorite part of the makeup!

6. To finish the Ahmanet makeup curl your eyelashes and apply a generous coat of your favorite mascara. To make your eye even more sexy and appealing apply false eyelashes and the makeup is done!

I had so much fun recreating The Mummy makeup look! I think you can wear this look on the upcoming Halloween party and it will look absolutely amazing with any eye color and skin complexion. Please let me know in the comments what do you think about this makeup and if you wanted the movie. I`m going to talk to you very soon again. Love you ♡

Lots of love,
Liz

During the hot summer days I prefer to highlight my cheekbones using powder highlighters. Dry illuminators, shimmers and highlighters are not greasy therefore they are the best option for everyone with an oily skin type, especially during the summer. I personally have a dry skin type, but even my skin starts to melt in the summer`s heat and I can`t imagine using an oil based highlighters for my cheekbones. Pastel rainbow highlighter is such a huge trend at the moment and as always I`m the last person on this planet to try it out myself. That`s why today I`m going to review a Rainbow Highlighter Powder* by a famous Born Pretty Store: an online makeup, fashion and jewelry retailer for beauty junkies.

First off let me talk about the packaging of this product. Rainbow Unicorn Highlighter comes in a thin cardboard box and immediately after I unwrapped the aluminium pan I threw away the packaging and placed the pan inside of a magnetic makeup case. The packaging looks absolutely useless to me, but I`m happy about the fact that it is recyclable and it does not take too much space. The surface of the Rainbow Unicorn Highlighter is very beautiful and reminds me of the tropical ocean`s water. Stunning and colorful! I like to apply this product on my cheekbones and the rainbow effect makes me feel like a mermaid :)

The formula of this Unicorn Highlighter is slightly disappointing. Of course all of the pastel shades are very pretty, they are pastel, so the highlighter does not loo weird on the skin. You can use all six shades at the same time or one by one, as you like. The brightest color of all is blue, but pinks and purple look nice as well. But the downside of the rainbow highlighter is its texture: it is too dry and chunky. It looks like the highlighter was baked for a better color pay off. The shimmering particles in the product are too big and rough, though the final result looks nice on the skin. You can use this highlighter in two different ways: dry use, for a soft and dewy finish and wet use for more intense color and more blinding effect.

Overall, I wanted to say that it is a perfect highlighting eye shadow for everyone who is not afraid of trying something new and different. Thanks to a special baked formula this Rainbow Unicorn Highlighter will last forever and you can use it in many ways. Hurry up to buy this highlighter, while Born Pretty Store has a huge discount on this product, at the moment it retails for $3.99. And don`t forget to use a special code LIZH10 to receive 10 % discount on your purchase, click the banner below to check out the Born Pretty Store product range. Hugs and kisses :*

What is your favorite highlighter at the moment?
Lots of love,
