makeup theory lesson all about makeup brush how produce brush liz bregel mua professional blogger makeup artist

Hi everyone! As a makeup lover I always wanted to capitally learn the makeup theory. The knowledge of a basic makeup techniques and current trends was never enough to me. I wanted to learn the full makeup history and behind the scenes of cosmetic industry.

That's why some time ago I`ve decided to dedicate few interesting posts and gather them under one rubric of makeup theory. Today I`m going to talk about basic makeup brush anatomy and tell you a little bit about the manufacturing process of our favorite makeup tools. I hope my lesson will be informative for makeup professionals and passionate makeup lovers.

First of all lets take a closer look on a makeup brush appearance and the process of its creation. Basically all brushes high end or a cheap drugstore brushes are made in the same way. The only thing that differs from brand to brand is the quality and origins of the materials used for creation of the brush and manufacturing process on a factory.

Can you believe that every makeup brush out there is handmade? Synthetic or natural, cheap or high end, high quality or low - all brushes are made by hand and though they are unique! People who work on the brush factory pay a very special attention to every step of the production process. It starts with hair preparation - a worker needs to gather, comb and mound hairs together. Then the hairs are carefully inserted in the ferule and pressed by a special machine. To make sure all hairs will stay on the place, they are glued together. Then a handle is added into the ferule and the brush is ready to be packed.

Basic makeup brush anatomy
Every makeup brush consists of three main parts: handle, ferrule and a head. These parts can be made of different materials, but they are possibly the most important elements when it comes to the quality of the brush.

Head - the actual hairs or bristles of a brush. There are many types of a hair that are used for makeup brushes. Common makeup brush can be made of a special synthetic or natural animal hairs. Usually manufacturers use squirrel, pony or goat hairs by carefully cutting or even picking the fallen hairs (cruelty free production). Manufacturers can also use different blends of hair for a larger makeup brushes like powder or contouring brushes. Nowadays more and more brands prefer to use synthetic materials over the natural hairs. A special man - made materials are not worse than a natural hair. These materials are non toxic, have very soft and smooth texture and sometimes last longer than a natural hairs. The most common materials used for synthetic makeup brushes are polyester. nylon and taklon.

The fullest part of brush or the flattest part (depends on the type) called a belly. Usually we use this part of the brush to press powder and eyeshadow on the skin. The end of the brush head called toe or point. The toe of a brush can have different shape and size and the final makeup results usually depend on this part of the brush.

Ferrule - a metal tube that holds the hairs and bristles of a brush and connects them with the brush handle. Ferrule is usually made of light metals: brass, copper, aluminum or tin. Ferrule should perfectly fit the head and the handle of the brush, otherwise the bristles will fall out. Ferrule`s heel is a part where the tube gets narrower, it presses and holds all the hair tightly together. A special glue is also used to secure hairs in the ferrule. A part where the ferrule connects with a handle calls crimp.

Handle - a part that is used to hold a brush. A handle can be wooden, plastic or even metal. The size of the handle can be very different, depending on the manufacturer and the type of a brush. Usually an eyeliner brushes have longer and thinner handles, this allows a makeup artist to keep a better balance. Kabuki and some contouring brushes have shorter handles and this allows to have a better control over the brush. Brands and manufacturers use handles to express their imagination and sometimes they create a real masterpieces on this part of a brush. Of course the design of the handle does not effect the final result, but it is always nice to have a beautiful brush set.

Next time we are going to take a closer look on each type of makeup brush and learn how they work with the makeup products and what result they provide. The Mummy Ahmanet Step By Step Makeup Tutorial

Few days ago I have finally watched Tom Cruise's new movie The Mummy. Growing up as a huge action adventure fan I loved The Mummy franchise with all my heart, so I was absolutely thrilled to watch the new version of a good old classic movie. And even though I have a mixed feelings about the new Mummy I`m absolutely in love with the stunning Egyptian makeup of Ahmanet. Her eye look is a simple version of Horus Eye makeup and it features two dramatic wings, one regular cat eye liner and one on the bottom lash line with a bit of teal eyeshadow. Inspired by this incredible makeup, today I`m going to show you how to recreate Ahmanet's Egyptian eye look. Follow my simple step by step tutorial and learn how to make your eyes look like charming and desirable.

1. Start your makeup with an eyeshadow primer, apply it all over your eyelid and then blend with a help of your ring finger. Eyeshadow primer will help your Egyptian makeup to last all day long without fading and creasing. Don`t forget to fill in your eyebrows, you can use your favorite eyeshadow or eyebrow pencil as you prefer.

2. Apply a matte peachy eyeshadow all over your eyelid and blend it with a help of fluffy blending brush. Peachy shade will beautifully contrast with a bright blue eyeshadow, creating a perfect combo for classic Egyptian makeup.

3. Now it is a time for the winged cat eyeliner, you can use any kind of eyeliner product you prefer: liquid, gel or cream eyeliner.  To make your look more intense tightline the upper waterline with a help of black eye kohl.

4. Ahmanet is an ancient mummy, but she looks young and fresh, so conceal any dark circles under your eyes and set the concealer with setting powder. Now it is time to sketch the bottom line with a help of a fine synthetic eyeliner brush.

5. Apply a teal blue eye pencil on the waterline and fill the bottom lash line with this gorgeous color. On the top of the pencil I also applied eyeshadow to make the color last longer and look brighter. This bold accent is my favorite part of the makeup!

6. To finish the Ahmanet makeup curl your eyelashes and apply a generous coat of your favorite mascara. To make your eye even more sexy and appealing apply false eyelashes and the makeup is done!

I had so much fun recreating The Mummy makeup look! I think you can wear this look on the upcoming Halloween party and it will look absolutely amazing with any eye color and skin complexion. Please let me know in the comments what do you think about this makeup and if you wanted the movie. I`m going to talk to you very soon again. Love you ♡

Hello lovelies, how do you feel about the upcoming autumn season? As the summer goes by and the cold weather approaches, I started to embrace those autumn vibes. Autumn is my favorite season of the year. Fallen leaves, knit blankets and rainy days always feel so cozy to me. And of course how can I forget about pumpkin spice latte? Inspired by the most romantic and delicious season Born Pretty Store released a  'Pumpkin Series'* nail polish collection. I always loved using makeup and beauty products by Born Pretty Store, but unfortunately I have never tried their nail polishes. Though I`ve heard tons of positive reviews on their nail products and always wanted to try them myself. Without further ado, let me show you the actual nail polish collection!

'Pumpkin Series' feature three gorgeous nail lacquers and I was lucky enough to try out all three colors from the collection. 'Pumpkin Pie' is a gorgeous muted peachy shade and I think it is a perfect color for everyday manicure. 'Pumpkin Spice' is the brightest color from the collection and the name of this nail polish perfectly resembled its vivid orange-y shade. This color is very warm, bright and juicy and I love to use it on my ring finger, as a bright blinding accent! And the last nail lacquer and my favorite is a 'Pumpkin Heart' - the only cold shade in 'Pumpkin Series'. It is a mild mixture between chestnut and taupe shades with a pinch of  purple. This color is perfect for colder days, when the sky is full of clouds and rain. All three colors are beautiful and you can easily combine them all together in one manicure. Love it!

All three nail lacquers have an amazing creamy formula and rich glossy finish. The application of this nail polishes is wonderful! The wide and short brush helps to control the process and easily glides on the nail. The formula isn't streaky and dries out in not time. 'Pumpkin Pie' and 'Pumpkin Spice' colors aren't opaque at one coat, so for the best result I like to apply two thin coats of the nail polish and a top of glossy top coat. 'Pumpkin Heart' is very opaque shade, but at the same time it has a thicker formula and the application is a little bit more complicated. 'Pumpkin Series' have a great staying power, they stayed on my nails for about three days.

Overall, I`m in love with the 'Pumpkin Series'! I highly recommend this nail polishes for everyone who loves autumn and everything that goes with this romantic season. The 'Pumpkin Series' nail polishes are currently on sale and retail for just $ 3,59 per bottle which I think is a great price. I also recommend you to check out Born Pretty Store 'Gray Series' featuring three cold nail lacquers. You can use a special code LIZH10 to receive 10 % discount on your purchase, click the banner below to check out the whole range of beauty and nail products. Hugs and kisses!

My makeup obsession have started about five years ago and one of the first thing I have discovered in a beauty world is a magical power of BB cream. BB Cream is a perfect choice for a day to day usage, especially if you can`t stand a heavy full coverage foundations or have an exhausted dry skin. The first BB cream I have ever tried was a tube of Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector and it was not good. This cream was too dark for my skin, it had alcohol in the formula and overall was very awful, the only positive thing about this product was an SPF 15. Since that time I have tried tons of  BB creams and it is probably the only thing I would like to take with me on the deserted island. As a huge fan of BB creams today I want to show you my favorite products at the moment. All of these beauties have a very special place on my beauty shelf , they have different undertones and formulas, so without further ado let me talk about them in details.

BB cream was invented in 1960s by dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek and it was meant to protect her patients' skin after facial treatments and surgeries. BB cream stands for a `beauty balm` - multi-functional beauty cream, that hydrates the skin, evens out the imperfections and protects face from the UV lights.

Palma Christie Ultra BB Cream | Review & Swatches

The first BB cream I want to talk about is a lightweight Palma Christie Ultra BB Cream. This product is has a very smooth and creamy texture. It is not greasy therefore perfect for oily and acne prone skin type. At first when you apply it on the skin it looks a little bit too light, but when you start working the cream in the skin it turns your skin shade. This product has a light coverage and it is better to use it on the days when your skin feels healthy and even. But once you apply Palma Christie BB cream on your face it instantly brightens up your complexion and hides red spots and discolorations. As far as hiding pimples and acne scars, I think you will need to use some concealer over the BB cream for better results.

Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream | Review & Swatches

The next product in my list is a Precious Mineral BB Cream by famous brand Etude House. Once applied on the skin it absorbs in no time and provides a medium  to full coverage. I really enjoy how Etude House BB cream feels on my skin, but it can emphasize dry patches. To make the application of this beauty balm easier and smoother first exfoliate your facial skin. The formula of Etude House cream is buildable, so if you feel like you need some extra coverage here and there you can reapply the product. It is water based, so the people with oily and acne prone skin will like to use this BB cream.

Essence Camouflage 2 in 1 Make-up & Concealer | Review & Swatches

One of my favorite full coverage BB Creams is an Essence Camouflage Makeup. It is 2 in 1 concealer and BB cream, so it provides an even and thick coverage. It perfectly hides all the blemishes, dark areas and hyper pigmentation and is great to use on those 'bad skin' days. Even though Essence Camouflage Makeup is water based it can make your skin feel a little bit too dry. I like to use it together with a hydrating skin primer or moisturizer. Thanks to its opaque formula a little bit of this cream goes a long way and because of its quick absorbing abilities you can use this cream without a setting powder. I use shade #20 nude beige with warm yellowish undertone and it is great for summer season, when my skin has a light tan.

And the last, but definitely not the least beauty balm I want to talk about is a Good Afternoon BB Cream by Macely. It has such a nice lightweight formula and sweet yummy scent! Berry Berry Tea has a light coverage, but it beautifully smooths out enlarged pores and acne scars. The undertone of the BB cream is neutral and sometimes I like to use to dissolve heavy foundations. The formula of this cream is very moisturizing, it makes my dry skin feel silky and healthy. I definitely recommend this cream for everyone who needs some extra nourishment and skin care.

To sum up, all the beauty balms I mentioned today in my list are amazing in their own special way and I like to use them all. Almost every makeup brands tries to make their own perfect BB cream and many of these attempts were successful. BB creams work differently and may look differently depending on a skin type and condition. If you are wondering how do they look on the skin check out my full reviews on every of these beauty balms by clicking on the links. And don`t forget to check out my previous My Favorite BB Creams post. Love you guys!

Rainbow Unicorn Highlighter | Review & Swatches

During the hot summer days I prefer to highlight my cheekbones using powder highlighters. Dry illuminators, shimmers and highlighters are not greasy therefore they are the best option for everyone with an oily skin type, especially during the summer. I personally have a dry skin type, but even my skin starts to melt in the summer`s heat and I can`t imagine using an oil based highlighters for my cheekbones. Pastel rainbow highlighter is such a huge trend at the moment and as always I`m the last person on this planet to try it out myself. That`s why today I`m going to review a Rainbow Highlighter Powder* by a famous Born Pretty Store: an online makeup, fashion and jewelry retailer for beauty junkies.

First off let me talk about the packaging of this product. Rainbow Unicorn Highlighter comes in a thin cardboard box and immediately after I unwrapped the aluminium pan I threw away the packaging and placed the pan inside of a magnetic makeup case. The packaging looks absolutely useless to me, but I`m happy about the fact that it is recyclable and it does not take too much space. The surface of the Rainbow Unicorn Highlighter is very beautiful and reminds me of the tropical ocean`s water. Stunning and colorful! I like to apply this product on my cheekbones and the rainbow effect makes me feel like a mermaid :)

The formula of this Unicorn Highlighter is slightly disappointing. Of course all of the pastel shades are very pretty, they are pastel, so the highlighter does not loo weird on the skin. You can use all six shades at the same time or one by one, as you like. The brightest color of all is blue, but pinks and purple look nice as well. But the downside of the rainbow highlighter is its texture: it is too dry and chunky. It looks like the highlighter was baked for a better color pay off. The shimmering particles in the product are too big and rough, though the final result looks nice on the skin. You can use this highlighter in two different ways: dry use, for a soft and dewy finish and wet use for more intense color and more blinding effect.

Overall, I wanted to say that it is a perfect highlighting eye shadow for everyone who is not afraid of trying something new and different. Thanks to a special baked formula this Rainbow Unicorn Highlighter will last forever and you can use it in many ways. Hurry up to buy this highlighter, while Born Pretty Store has a huge discount on this product, at the moment it retails for $3.99. And don`t forget to use a special code LIZH10 to receive 10 % discount on your purchase, click the banner below to check out the Born Pretty Store product range. Hugs and kisses :*

What is your favorite highlighter at the moment?
