A few months ago, my dear friend Paloma, her partner, their kids, and their pets packed up their entire world on the mainland and moved across the Pacific Ocean to Maui, Hawaii. Watching her family move away and go through such a drastic transition has been an absolute whirlwind of logistics, raw emotion, and hope. Packing up an entire household is one of the most stressful experiences imaginable, and watching my friend tackle it proved just how much grit, patience, and humor it takes to turn an island dream into reality.
The Reality of Island Time
Before the move, Paloma and her family ran on pure mainland hustle: instant deliveries, back-to-back schedules, and constant rushing. Landing in Maui brought that urgency to an abrupt halt.
"On the island, things move with genuine intention," she says.
At first, the slower pace felt jarring for a busy family trying to get settled, but later they quickly realized that rushing only created friction. Relocating a family across an ocean isn't a DIY job. Between cargo freight, strict agricultural inspections, and fragile belongings, the stakes were high. I distinctly remember how terrified Paloma was of heirlooms sitting in damp shipping containers or family keepsakes arriving broken. And who wouldn’t be?

We all knew that Hawaii had a high cost of living, but experiencing everyday island prices firsthand required a total budget overhaul. Since nearly everything is shipped in, grocery runs and daily essentials are significantly more expensive.
Paloma did a little research on this topic, and instead of routine superstore runs, the best idea would be to adapt around local farmers' markets. Buying fresh, locally grown produce not only trimmed their grocery bill and supported island growers, but it also delivered far fresher ingredients for family dinners.
Final Thoughts: Embracing the Change...
The most meaningful part of Paloma’s journey has been learning to honor the land and the community. Moving to Hawaii is a privilege, and her family embraced the responsibility to listen, learn, and give back. That's why I wanted to share this story with you, so that you can learn from her experience.
From strictly using reef-safe sunscreen and joining local beach cleanups to taking the time to learn local history, their daily focus is on respect and mindfulness. Being warmly welcomed by their new neighbors showed them that the Aloha spirit thrives on active, humble participation.
