You all probably know by now how much I love a dramatic eye makeup look – I mention it in almost every tutorial! However, there is a fine line between high-fashion drama and a look that feels a bit messy or unpolished. To keep our bold looks looking expensive and clean, we just need to follow a few simple rules.
Today, I’m going to show you how to create a stunning, Gothic navy smoky eye using only a few products and straightforward techniques. Whether you are a seasoned pro or a complete beginner, you will be able to recreate this look effortlessly. Let’s dive in!
- Step 1: Protect Your Canvas
A dramatic smoky eye always requires a flawless complexion free of redness and imperfections. However, highly pigmented shadows – especially dark blues and blacks – are notorious for fallout. To avoid ruining your base, always do your eye makeup first. Leave your primer, foundation, and powder for after the eyes are complete.
- Step 2: Balance the Brows
Fill in your eyebrows, taking care not to make them too dark or heavy. You want your brows to frame the look so they don't get lost against the deep shadow, but they shouldn't compete with or distract from the eye makeup itself. A soft pomade or a micro-lining pencil works beautifully here.
- Step 3: Prep the Lids
Prepare your eyelids by applying an eyeshadow primer to ensure longevity and prevent creasing. Too much primer in the crease can grab onto deep pigments and make seamless blending much more difficult. If you don't have a dedicated eye primer, a thin layer of concealer set with a translucent powder works as a great alternative.
- Step 4: Lay Down the Navy
Now for the star of the show. For this moody, dark fantasy-inspired look, I chose a deep, matte navy blue. Pat the shadow across your mobile lid to build up the intensity. Next, take a clean, fluffy blending brush (see my brush beginners guide) and softly diffuse the edges upward into the crease using small, circular motions.
Avoid taking the blue all the way to the brow bone; instead, let it softly fade out. Repeat this process on the lower lash line, blending the shadow outwards for a cohesive, blown-out effect.
- Step 5: Define and Highlight
Next, grab a liquid liner or a sharp black eye pencil. Line your upper lash line and extend it into a sharp, dramatic wing. To create a captivating, almond-shaped gaze, gently elongate the inner corner as well. To break up the darkness and add dimension, highlight your brow bone and the very inner corner of your eyes with a soft white or cream shadow.
- Step 6: Tightline for Deep Drama
Run a waterproof black kohl eyeliner along both your upper and lower waterlines. This closes any gaps between your lashes, instantly intensifying the look and adding an element of mystery. Finish the natural lashes by curling them and applying a generous coat of your favorite volumizing mascara.
- Step 7: The Perfect Falsies
Complete the Gothic eyes with a pair of false eyelashes. When pairing falsies with a dark, heavy smoky eye, I recommend choosing a wispy, "my lashes but better" style. Super dense, heavy lashes will block out all the beautiful blending work you just did on the lid. We want drama, not overload!
- Step 8: Clean Up and Base
Now that the eyes are done, use a makeup wipe or a cotton pad dipped in micellar water to cleanly sweep away any fallen blue pigment under the eyes. Once the area is clean, go ahead with your usual foundation, concealer, and powder routine. For the lips, I highly recommend sticking to nude, neutral tones or a soft balm – a bright lip will compete with the intensity of the navy.
Final Thoughts...
And there you have it! Your dramatic, Gothic navy smoky eye is complete. For this entire look, I only used a few staple products: a deep blue shadow, a highlighting shade, a black pencil liner, mascara, and a pair of wispy falsies. It takes just a few minutes once you master the blending, proving you don't need a massive palette to create something striking.
I really hope you love this look as much as I do. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below – and tell me, what is your absolute favorite go-to eye makeup look?
