With its grand, enchanting castles, lush vineyards, and vibrant cities, this region promises an unforgettable journey for anyone who decides to travel here. So, if you're wondering where to go and what to see, here are my top five travel locations that you'll definitely love as well!
Why Baden-Württemberg Is a Cornucopia of Experiences?
Baden-Württemberg is a scenic state settled in southwest Germany and offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Renowned for its stunning landscapes, from the Black Forest to the vineyards of the Rhine Valley, the state attracts travelers from around the world, who seek outdoor adventures, historical places, and delicious drinks produced in the area.
The region preserved a bunch of charming medieval towns and historic castles, while its thriving, large cities, such as Stuttgart and Freiburg, are where you'll find all the vibrancy of modern culture. So, this state combines the best of both worlds: ancient and modern!
#1. Schwarzwald
The Schwarzwald aka Black Forest, a vast expanse of lush greenery, is a hiker's paradise. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature, hike through picturesque trails, and visit charming villages like Triberg, known for its stunning waterfalls. For a unique experience, take a ride on a traditional cuckoo clock train.
- What to Do in the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) Region:
In the Black Forest region, you can walk, breathe, and enjoy the weather! I recommend visiting in early fall when the leaves are a stunning blend of bright yellow, red, and green, just beginning to fall. You'll love the leisurely stroll through the treetop path.
#2. Tübingen
Tübingen is a charming university town located along the Neckar River surrounded by a well-preserved ancient wall. It is a small, inviting place for everyone who looks to visit a picturesque old town, away from modern buildings and loud places. It is a town blend of history, culture, and vibrant student life creating a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.
Although, it can be quite busy during the tourist season. If you are not a fan of crowds, try visiting Tübingen during the colder time of the year: from September to May.
- What to do in Tübingen:
Going to Tübingen? Then you should definitely go to the largest Chocolate Festival in Germany called chocolART. It is unusually held during the first week of December (03.12-08.12). Alternatively, enjoy the punt boat race during the Feast of Corpus Christi.
#3. Hohenzollern Castle
Above the German town of Hechingen, nestled on a hilltop, stands the majestic Hohenzollern Castle. Its beauty can be admired from afar, but the true experience lies within its old walls. This iconic landmark (the most visited castle in Germany!), steeped in history, has been the ancestral seat of the Hohenzollern dynasty for centuries.
You can go almost anywhere, take pictures and admire the castle's ramparts, gaze upon the rolling hills, charming distant villages, and horizons. My personal favorite location is an open space close to the cemetery, as it presents a breathtaking view.
- What to do in Hohenzollern Castle:
While paying a visit to this historic place, don't forget to peek in Protestant and Catholic chapels, located close to the the open-air museum. For the most adventurous – casemate aka the cellar, where you can closely inspect family treasures, sculptures, and armory.
#4. Ulmer Münster (Das Münster Unserer Lieben Frau zu Ulm)
With its sky-scraping spire, Ulm Minster is considered to be the tallest church in the whole world! Just imagine climbing the steps of its streamlined tower and looking down on the city. Doesn't it sound exciting? Well, this may not be the most ''fun'' location in Baden-Württemberg, but for architectural enthusiasts, it is probably the number one location in the whole of Germany.
This Gothic masterpiece is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of medieval builders. The church's interior is equally impressive, with its spacious nave, ornate stained-glass windows, and intricate carvings.
- What to do in Ulmer Münster?
If in Schwarzwald you stroll, in the Lutheran church of Ulm you climb the stairways! You enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the wide halls, breathe in the smells of oils, and listen to the sound pounding of the bells.
#5. Stuttgart Vineyards
While Stuttgart is often associated with its automotive industry, it is also a place where the tastiest berries ripen on Baden-Württemberg hills. It is home to numerous vineyards and high-quality wines, particularly Riesling and Trollinger.
- What to do in Stuttgart Vineyards?
If you dream of a romantic out-of-town wedding ceremony, this place would be a perfect destination wedding for your vineyard-themed wedding. You can take a walk through the lines of grape bushes, drink sweet and sour vines, and enjoy the romantic sunset.
